SaverSpy data breach
2,457,420 accounts · breached September 18, 2018
This is a spam list: a collection of addresses used for sending bulk email. Being in it mainly means more spam and phishing. No account of yours was necessarily broken into.
Have I Been Pwned treats this breach as sensitive: it does not reveal publicly whether a particular address is in it. Only the owner of an address can check, after verifying it.
What happened
In September 2018, security researcher Bob Diachenko discovered a massive collection of personal details exposed in an unprotected Mongo DB instance. The data appears to have been used in marketing campaigns (possibly for spam purposes) but had little identifying data about it other than a description of "Yahoo_090618_ SaverSpy". The data set provided to HIBP had almost 2.5M unique email addresses (all of which were from Yahoo!) alongside names, genders and physical addresses.
What data leaked
- Email addresses
- Genders
- Names
- Physical addresses
What to do if you had an account
- Turn on two-step sign-in. Enable two-factor authentication where the service offers it, preferably with an authenticator app or a passkey. A leaked password alone is then not enough to get in.
- Expect targeted phishing. Leaked contact details are used to write convincing fake messages that mention the breached company or your real name. Do not click links in unexpected emails or texts about this account; go to the site by typing its address.
