Last week my computer was infected with the Cryptolocker virus. The computer technician I went to cleaned up my computer but told me I had the latest version and there is no way I can have my files restored. Is that correct and is there any hope that one day I may be able to have them unencrypted?

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, ransomware viruses like CryptoLocker are usually extremely vicious, especially new and updated variants which are released after the cyber criminals fix the flaws found in the initial version. At the moment of writing, there is no way of decrypting the files locked by CryptoLocker. You can try recovering some of your data with PhotoRec, R-Studio or Kaspersky virus-fighting utilities, but none of these tools can guarantee 100% success. Of course, you can also wait till the decryption key is invented, but that might take a while. In the meanwhile protect your future files by making backup copies and keeping them on external storage devices.
