Crew.2480 Removal Guide

What is Crew.2480?

Crew.2480 – an old trojan you are unlikely to encounter

Crew.2480

Crew.2480 is an ancient Trojan by comparison. First developed in Finland in 1992, it was not widely prevalent, although it managed to make a name for itself back in the days. This old trojan affects only DOS platforms, that's why it's harmless for most modern systems such as Windows 10 or Windows 8.

The Trojan usually performs a set of destructive actions, which can lead to undesirable effects. Although this parasite is out of circulation for a long period of time, it still can incidentally infect the system. In case you do, follow the removal guide below.

Name Crew.2480
Type Trojan
Distribution Infected external storage devices such as CDs or USB drives
Affected platforms MS-DOS
Damage Infected COM files on the computer which increase in size
Removal Delete the infected files

It is not largely known how this Trojan spreads, although it is likely to be external storage devices such as CDs, as DOS did not originally have networking capabilities. However, users could purchase the needed hardware and indeed connect to the internet, which could be used for the spread of the Trojan.

Once installed, the Trojan would immediately restart the PC. During installation, malware would infect various COM files on the system. To be precise, the Crew.2480 virus would only affect files that at least 10K in size, although this rule would only apply if the system's date's month is set to January through May. Trojan would also increase the size of the infected files by 2,480 bytes.

If the Trojan is installed during the months of June through December, it would not replicate but instead show the following message:

This program is cracked by European Cracking Crew
Notice this: TS ain't smart at all.
Distribution since 11-06-1987 (or 06-11-1987)

Press any key

Here are a few symptoms users might experience when the Trojan is in operation:

  • random system reboots;
  • increased size of .COM files;
  • changes to time and date;
  • system crashes and hangs.

In order to remove Crew.2480 from your computer, you have to find and delete the affected files.

MS-DOS also had malware

DOS is a very old platform that was used prior to Windows. It was developed by an independent programming developer and then purchased by Microsoft in 1980 and released to the public in 1985. Since then, users worldwide would use computers running MS-DOS platforms, up until the release of Windows systems which included a more modern graphical user interface (GUI).

In fact, you might be using the DOS platform even now, although it is hard to say that this operating system is user-friendly, especially for those who are used to sleek and modern UIs, and never had to deal with the operation of old systems.

The malware was around since the 80s, so it is not surprising that it also affected MS-DOS platforms. In most cases, users would infect their machines by connecting an external storage device that is infected by a virus.

Delete all the Crew.2480-associated files

Malware for DOS was relatively primitive and did not work the same way modern viruses or Trojans operate. Their functions were usually pretty limited and showed visible signs and symptoms of the infection. In order to delete such a virus, you would have to find the COM files which were affected by them and delete them.

You could also try anti-virus programs such as SpyHunter 5Combo Cleaner that could be able to scan your device for malicious programs and eliminate them automatically for you.

How to prevent from getting trojans

Access your website securely from any location

When you work on the domain, site, blog, or different project that requires constant management, content creation, or coding, you may need to connect to the server and content management service more often. The best solution for creating a tighter network could be a dedicated/fixed IP address.

If you make your IP address static and set to your device, you can connect to the CMS from any location and do not create any additional issues for the server or network manager that needs to monitor connections and activities. VPN software providers like Private Internet Access can help you with such settings and offer the option to control the online reputation and manage projects easily from any part of the world.

Recover files after data-affecting malware attacks

While much of the data can be accidentally deleted due to various reasons, malware is one of the main culprits that can cause loss of pictures, documents, videos, and other important files. More serious malware infections lead to significant data loss when your documents, system files, and images get encrypted. In particular, ransomware is is a type of malware that focuses on such functions, so your files become useless without an ability to access them.

Even though there is little to no possibility to recover after file-locking threats, some applications have features for data recovery in the system. In some cases, Data Recovery Pro can also help to recover at least some portion of your data after data-locking virus infection or general cyber infection.
