It started with a Virus Bursters infection. I knew the file I had was risky and gave it several virus scans before runnining it...but apparently they all missed it's true nature. Almost immediately I had Virus bursters popping up. But apparently it brought some friends as Vundo.B also came along and was a major pain to get rid of (Had to do it manually following the instructions at www.aux.uwm.edu/compop/Vundo.htm)
I've tried smitfraudfix but it doesn't seem to work as described. After scanning it never gave me an option to clean the registry even when it was finding things to clean. But now it's reporting evrything clean. Also reporting my system as clean are Norton AV, Adaware, SB S&D, AVG, and Superantispyware.
But I've still got a red logo in my taskbar saying "Security warning: your computer may be infected with harmfull or unwatned software!" along with it's little pop-up. And the only options being Open or Ignore. And it's not one of the valid apps I know I'm running.
Here's the HJT log:

Hello, visitor!
The Hijack This log analyzer has analyzed your log. Please take a closer look on the results.
Your system seems to be infected with malicious parasites. Please follow the steps below in order to eliminate the infection and clean up your computer.
1. Download the Pocket KillBox utility. You will need it later to delete parasite-related files and folders.
2. Use HijackThis to fix the following entries:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinVNC] "C:\Program Files\TightVNC\WinVNC.exe" -servicehelper
3. The following entries are not malicious, but some of them are not used anymore. You may use HijackThis to fix a few of them. However, please keep in mind that some of the entries marked as Questionable or Not Needed are fully legitimate and might be required by installed software to work properly, while some others might be related to certain parasites. It is up to you to decide whether you need any of them, or not.

4. Now restart your system in Safe Mode. This step is very important!
5. Use the Pocket KillBox utility to delete the following files:
C:\Program Files\TightVNC\WinVNC.exe
The following files and Windows registry entries are marked as "unknown". Currently, the HijackThis Log Analyzer cannot provide required information on these items. The files and entries in the list below can be both malicious and fully legitimate. Because of this, please do not take any action! Wait for the forum responders or other forum users to provide you with necessary details and further instructions.

After going through all the steps, run another HijackThis scan and post a fresh log to the HijackThis analyzer. It is possible that some parasites your system was infected with were not removed completely and may restore themselves later.
If you want to see more detailed analysis of your log, click here.
Thank you for using the 2-Spyware.com HijackThis log analyzer! |

I guess I should have mentioned that VNC is not there malisciously as it's something I use and need legitimately to access my various systems. |

Think I may have found it. With help from the detailed HJT analysis and this older thread
I found this entry:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTDrive] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvrif.dll,startup
The C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvrif.dll file had a timestamp right when I got hit and web searches seem to confirm that it was likely a varient. I fixed it with HJT, then used killbox to get rid of the DLL and now the icon in my taskbar is gone finally. |

Hi Juggle. Welcome to the 2-Spyware.com forums!
The file you've deleted was the actual cause of that icon and fake warning messages. You should be clean now .
Don't forget to use HijackThis to fix the following entries:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {AE9153E2-9555-E38B-7804-C8896C5463CB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ytlqlef.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AE9153E2-9555-E38B-7804-C8896C5463CB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ytlqlef.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F18F04B0-9CF1-4b93-B004-77A288BEE28B} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winhab32 - winhab32.dll (file missing)
These are remnants of infections you had. |

Yep I took care of those as well while I was in there.
Thanks for the help and the great log analyizer. I had looked through my log three times and not found anything...the detailed results page with the color coding made it SO MUCH easier to find the bits I had to pay more attention to and finally track down the infection. After almost two weeks of hunting this thing it's great to finally feel good about it being gone. |
