Hello all,
My problems started about a month ago. I bought a program called System Mechanics to help me to eliminate some files that I couldn't remove. When I bought my computer, I didn't use the add/remove protion of Windows -- so I ended up with the "cannot remove file - can't find file" error all the time. So I bought this software to eliminate these dead files, and help clean up my computer.
Well when I installed it - I noticed that my hard drive started to run after about 4 or 5 minutes of system idle time. At first I thought that my screensaver was doing it - we downloaded a screensaver for the holidays - it had several pictures and themes. I didn't pay to much to it frankly, for about a week.
Well after a week - I started having conflicts with my anti-virus and the System Mechanics software. I finally had to remove it because of all the conflicts. The day that I removed the software I started to really hawkeye the performance of my computer, to make sure that all conflicts were resolved, and that there wasn't anymore trouble. This is when I noticed my hard drive running.
I removed the screensaver program thinking it was slamming my hard drive ... didn't fix the problem. This problem progressed - I started having "Virtual Memory" warnings saying that I had run out and Windows was making more. My harddrive was running constantly day and night, and for the life of me I couldn't get it to stop. Last night I was determined to find out what the heck was going on. I opened my task manager and expanded the window until I could see all my processes.
With this expanded view I was able to monitor the CPU usage percentage - to try to figure out what was causing my computer to run. Well after about 4 or 5 minutes the CISVC.EXE file started up - using about 17% of my memory usage. When this file started running - McCafee Shield.exe file started running as well -- using about 8% of my CPU usage. With these two programs running - my hard drive was full tilt and my CPU usage was varing about 21- 28% usage ... WOW!
So the long and short of this big long winded thread is -- What the heck is this file? and Can I get rid of it? Right now what I do, when I reboot my computer - I go into task manager and immediatly "end task" this file. I watched my computer last night and my hard drive stopped running constantly, and this morning with the screen saver on it wasn't running either.
What I havn't tried yet is to place my system in hibernate or standby. A prelude to this was when I was troubleshooting why my hard drive running - I had actually changed the "Power" settings for my computer to attempt to just shut my computer down after 15 minutes or so. This way I could see if it was a screen saver, or something else. Well, when this file started slamming my hard drive -- my system would never go into any power saver mode.
Overall - I feel this file is BAD for my computer. What I lack is the knowledge on how to eliminate this file if I'm supposed to, or How to make it stop conflicting if its a needed file. What I would love is an expert opinion on this file on what to do next.

Hi, Bill. Welcome to 2-Spyware.com forums!

It sounds like you are experiencing technical problems caused by software or hardware. The cisvc.exe file usually is not a virus or spyware parasite. It is a legitimate part of Windows operating system related to the Indexing Service. This service continuously monitors your hard disk and indexes all the files on it. It is made in order to quicken searches for files. However, very often the Indexing Service not only does not quicken the search, but also noticeably degrades overall system performance. This might be just your case. I suggest disabling the Indexing Service or completely uninstalling it from the system.

To disable the Indexing Service do the following:
1. Click on the Start button and then click on Run.... This should open the Run dialog.
2. Within the dialog type services.msc and press enter. This should open the Services window.
3. Within the list of services find Indexing Service and double-click on it. The service's properties will appear.
4. In that window click on the Stop button and change the Startup type to Disabled. Then apply new settings by pressing Apply and OK.
5. Now you should restart your computer.

On next startup your system should run much faster. Please tell me if it doesn't. We'll find another solution.

just a bit curious i have 100% CPU useage and i get a magnigfing glass in my task bar i was wondering if this is related to whatever happend to him and if i should do what GTO suggested.
