Hi there - I'm suffering with this too. I've tried to follow the manual removal instructions, and was fine until the deregistering the stickrep.dll file - it wouldn't let me.

I have already run the spyware doctor file that is linked to no avail, so any extra pointers would be really appreciated.

Cheers

Mrs Chris

Edited to add - I've run hijack this, and here is the log file if it's any help:

thanks.

Same here, my Spysweeper could not remove it. Sucks, my computer is only 2 days old! I also cannot remove the stickrep.dll as per the instructions given, is there another way? Always says I do not have proper acess...

What if I REINSTALL Windows? Will it wipe out this thing?

Hi.

Please follow these steps in order to delete the stickrep.dll file:

1. Download the Pocket KillBox utility.

2. Restart your system in Safe Mode.

3. Use Pocket KillBox to delete the stickrep.dll file.

These are basic instructions. If you need more help, please download the HijackThis program, run a system scan and post your log to the HijackThis log analysis section.

P.S. There is no need to reinstall Windows. If you do not have sufficient antivirus and anti-spyware protection, your system will get infected again.

bigboy, please download the HijackThis program and run a system scan. Then create a topic in the HijackThis log analysis section and post your log there.

I managed to delete the stickrep.ddll in safe mode then I just clicked the spywarequake uninstall icon and so far so good I must have ran every free scan there is and the only thing they find now is cookies do you think I should still do the smitsrem thing or should I be ok. I also read that the spyquake crap is self mutating and that is why spydoctor found it the first time then it came back and didn't find it the second time. is this possible?

Hi, bigboy.

I recommend running smitRem. The stickrep.dll file is not the only one that SpywareQuake installs. There can be more malicious objects in your system.

SpywareQuake as well as SpyFalcon, SpywareStrike and SpyAxe can mutate. Of course, it does not mutate like a viruse changing its own code, etc. Instead, each of these corrupt applications can have several versions. These versions use different files, registry entries, etc. You can remove a known version with the help of your spyware remover. But a new one will use different objects, so your spyware remover may fail detecting and eliminating it.

does that mean I can't really remove the trojan manually since it keeps mutating? cuz yeah, this one is persistent, keeps coming back everytime... I tried to rename stickrep.dll first time and it worked, but since it's back now, i guess I'd better use the killbox now... grrr... it ruined my math contest today for me... my CMO... T_T

I was able to remove spywarequake quite easily. First disable system restore, if you don't it will remain in your system. I happen to use Mcafee security center. I downloaded their Dat file ran it and Wal-ah it was permentley removed. Rember what ever method you use 1st turn off system restore. Good luck.

Ichimaru Gin, you got it all wrong. You CAN remove the trojan manually. However, if you do not have an advanced firewall as well as sufficient antivirus and anti-spyware protection, your system might be reinfected in no time. But this time it might be a new version of the trojan, so you'll have to wait for updated manual removal instructions.

SpywareQuake and similar rogues do not mutate like some viruses do. But their makers release new versions regularly.
