Has anyone who was blackmailed by RAT email ever been truly exposed from a RAT threat? In other words, did you not pay and then did they do what they threatened to do…post on social media, send to all your contacts, etc?

Since you haven't provided us with details on what RAT you are dealing with, how the email looks like, and what is the condition of your machine, it's difficult for us to help you.
In fact, there are highly dangerous RATs, for example, Orcus, Gh0st, NjRat, Remcos, and many others. This type of RATs, also known as Remote Access Trojans are extremely dangerous as they can spy on the user by harvesting data stored on the machine, taking screenshots, logging keystrokes, recording video conversations, and many more. If you have been dealing with this type of RAT, you may be in a real trouble of getting exposed publicly for some behavior.
However, if your machine did not exhibit suspicious behavior (slowdowns, random restarts, BSODs, high CPU usage, etc.), it's not very likely that a RAT has been hiding in your machine. It's more likely that your email address has been leaked somewhere and scammers who are working with scam types like Porn Blackmail or similar sending you fake blackmailing emails with an intention to earn easy money. In this particular case, you should include the sender that sends you scam into the email's blacklist.
Nevertheless, a throughout system scan with a professional anti-virus program is recommended to make sure that RAT is not spying on you. Spyware is a highly dangerous piece of malware, which may be a tough nut to crack. Therefore, try to restart your machine into Safe Mode and run a scan while in Safe environment. If you have any other questions, please contact us and provide as many details about the issue as possible.
