Ransomware is a type of computer infection that, once inside the machine, locks up all the personal files on the system - photos, documents, databases, videos, music, etc. From that point in time, none of the data is usable, as opening it becomes impossible.
As it is typical to ransomware infection, all of the personal files are appended with an extension, such as .locked, .crypted, .seto, or other. Some of the ransomware variants were observed not appending extension - it all depends on which type of ransomware is affecting your system.
Finally, you should be able to see a ransom note (typically a .txt file) inserted into each of the affected folders - it usually explains what happened to your files and what you need to to do to recover them.
In short, you should try opening any personal files on your computer - if you managed to do so, it means that there is no ransomware in your PC. Nevertheless, you should also scan your machine with anti-malware software if you suspect that there is, in fact, an infection present.
