Youtubeconverter.io was a YouTube-to-MP3 converter that our 2019 report found asking for notification permission, with ads and "Your Mac is getting slow" alerts. On 6 October 2026 the address did not open, so what is left to remove is a notification permission, an extension or a file you may have taken from its ads, or a copy that uses the name.

What Youtubeconverter.io was and how it worked
Youtubeconverter.io was a website, not a program: you pasted a link to a YouTube video and it offered the video or its sound as a file. Our 2019 report found a notification request and promoted links around that converter; the address no longer opens.

Converters like this exist because video sites offer no download button for other people's videos. The sites live on advertising instead, which is why their pages were full of it, and why people who only wanted an MP3 ended up reading about notifications and redirects.
Is Youtubeconverter.io dangerous?
Our test on 6 October 2026
We could not test Youtubeconverter.io the way a visitor does: the address did not open at all, so there was no page to look at, no notification request to see and no download to try.

Nothing to open, but check your browser The original address does not answer, so it cannot ask for anything now, and one failed visit proves little about how it behaved when it was online. The leftover risks are a notification permission you may have allowed years ago, a file or extension you took from its ads, and look-alike sites that use the name.

Our guide, published on 9 October 2019, described a "YouTube Converter" page with a link box and a Convert button. The picture shows the browser's "wants to Show notifications" prompt with Block and Allow in Chrome, and Firefox's "Will you allow ... to send notifications?" with Not Now and Allow Notifications.

After Allow: "Your Mac is getting slow"
The picture shows two Chrome notification banners on a Mac reading "Your Mac is getting slow" and "BOOST your Mac now by 2..." (the text is cut off). Our old guide says such alerts also claimed that protection tools needed updates or that the device was infected, and that clicking them opened pages for a PC booster or a fake antivirus program. We have not seen them ourselves in 2026.

Promoted links under the link box
Four promoted links sat between the page menu and the link box: three were game and adult-themed titles, one advertised a concert in Lithuania, so at least some of the ads were chosen by the visitor's location. Our old guide says clicks on such ads led to redirects to online gaming and adult pages.

What the site's terms said
Our old guide quoted the site's terms: visitors would be exposed to content from many sources that the site did not control, some of it inaccurate, offensive or harmful to their computer, and they waived any rights against the site. We could not re-read the terms, because the site does not load.

The registry's record shows a transfer on 2 March 2021. Today the registrar is MarkMonitor Inc. and the registrant organisation is Google LLC. The record does not say what became of the converter.

On 6 October 2026 youtubeconverter.io had no address in our test. When it stopped answering, we do not know.
What its notifications said, and what they really were
A notification from a website is not a message from your computer. The words in it are written by whoever bought the ad.

These notifications arrive through the browser, so the permission, not a hidden program, is usually what keeps them coming. Taking the permission back stops them at once. The steps are in the browser tabs below.

Copies are where pushy notification requests, fake download buttons and installers usually appear, because many exist to sell traffic rather than to convert videos. Check the address bar before you paste a link, and close any converter that asks you to allow notifications, install an extension or download a "player" first.
The real risks, from most to least serious
"Youtubeconverter.io virus" is not an accurate term: the converter page itself installed nothing in the reports we have. These are the ways a visit could go wrong.

Running a file or extension that came from an ad
Download pages are full of buttons that are really ads: fake players, fake updates, search-changing extensions and installers with extra programs inside. Opening one of these is how adware, browser hijackers and, at worst, real malware get onto a computer, and some start more downloads without asking.

A single click gives the site, or the page an ad opened, the right to push ads to your desktop until you withdraw it. On Windows, Chrome and Edge keep running in the background by default and can still show them after the window is closed; Firefox delivers them only while it is open.

Clear the site data
Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete, choose All time, tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, and click Delete data.
Reset Chrome
Open Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults and confirm with Reset settings. This resets the start page, search engine and pinned tabs and turns off extensions; bookmarks and saved passwords stay. To stop notifications after you close Chrome, also turn off Settings > System > Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed.

Clear the site data
Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Delete browsing data > Choose what to clear, set All time, tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, and click Clear now.
Reset Edge
Open Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values and confirm with Reset. Extensions are turned off and the start page goes back to default; favourites, history and saved passwords stay. Clear cookies and site data
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Clear Data, tick both boxes and click Clear.
Refresh Firefox
Open the menu > Help > More troubleshooting information and click Refresh Firefox. Add-ons and custom settings are removed and the home page goes back to default; bookmarks, history and passwords stay.

Take back the notification permission
Safari 18 and later on macOS: open Safari > Settings > Websites > Notifications, select
youtubeconverter.io(or any site you do not recognise) and set it to Deny, or click Remove. Untick Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications at the bottom so no site can ask again.Remove extensions you do not recognise
In Safari > Settings > Extensions, select anything you did not install yourself and click Uninstall.
Clear the site data
In Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, remove the site's data, or use History > Clear History > all history. To empty the cache as well, turn on Show features for web developers in Settings > Advanced and choose Develop > Empty Caches.
Check the Mac for apps from the ads
Ads also target Mac users with fake players and "cleaners". In Finder > Applications, move anything unknown to the Bin. In System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions, remove unknown items. Then use Go > Go to Folder to check
/Library/LaunchAgents,~/Library/LaunchAgents,/Library/LaunchDaemonsand/Library/Application Supportfor folders and files with the same unknown names, and empty the Bin.
Then, whichever browser you use
Step 2: Scan the PC if you downloaded anything from the ads
Most people who only saw the notifications can skip this step. If a notification or the page it opened made you download or run a file, delete the file and run a full scan, then a Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
In Windows 11 and Windows 10 open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) and click Scan now. The PC restarts and the scan takes about 15 minutes, so save your work first.

If you clicked an ad or ran a file
If all you saw were notifications and pop-ups, the browser steps above are the whole job. Do the three things below only when you installed an extension or opened a downloaded file after clicking an ad.

Uninstall what came with it
In Windows 11 go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 10: Apps & features), sort the list by install date and remove every program that appeared on the day you visited the converter or clicked its ads (Uninstall a program or app in Windows On uGetFix). On a Mac, follow the last Safari step below: Applications, Login Items and the Library folders.

Scan twice
Start a Microsoft Defender Full scan. When it finishes, run Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) as well: it restarts the PC and checks before Windows loads, so it can catch trojans and remote-access tools that hide while the system runs.

Reset the browser
A program taken from an ad often changes the start page, the search engine or the installed extensions. If you see any of that, use the reset step in your browser's tab above.
If a pop-up or redirect appears only once, close the tab (Ctrl + W, or Cmd + W on a Mac) and do not click anything in it. If pop-ups, notifications and redirects keep coming, the cause is usually a notification permission or an extension, which the browser steps remove; a program you ran is the cause only if you ran one. If you typed a password, card number or other personal details on a page an ad opened, change that password now and call your bank about the card.
How to keep it from happening again
Do
- Stop sites from even asking: in Chrome open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications and choose Don't allow sites to send notifications.
- Get programs from the maker's own website or from the Microsoft Store (the App Store on a Mac). Official sources rarely bundle unwanted extras.
- In an installer pick Custom or Advanced setup, read each screen, and untick the pre-ticked "recommended" extras before you continue.
- Leave Microsoft Defender SmartScreen or Chrome's Enhanced protection switched on; both warn before a known harmful page or download opens.
- Back your files up regularly with File History or OneDrive, so a bad download or a dying disk does not take your documents with it.
- A VPN on public Wi-Fi hides your IP address from the sites and ad networks you visit. It does not block ads or stop malware.
Don't
- Press Allow because a page says you need it to continue, to play a video or to prove you are human.
- Open an
.exeor.msifile handed out by a converter: a converted video is never a program. - Add a "player", codec or browser extension because a site insists on it before it will show your file.
- Click ads on converter, torrent, gambling, adult or free-game pages; the networks behind them also sell space to scammers, and a single click can start an unwanted download.
Safer ways to get a video or its sound
Use the platform's own option first: it keeps the creator's rights intact and involves no third-party site. Converting is useful, but it is not worth an infected computer.

Many people search for converters because they do not want to pay for music or pay for the official audio. If you still use an online converter, use it in a browser profile with notifications blocked, ignore every button except the download link made for your video, and scan any file that turned out to be a program instead of a video. A real download is an .mp4, .webm or .mp3 file.
Questions about Youtubeconverter.io
Is Youtubeconverter.io safe?
We could not use it: on 6 October 2026 the address did not open in our test, so nothing it does today can be judged. Our 2019 report found the converter page asking for notification permission and surrounded by promoted links for games and adult offers, and notifications that claimed the computer was slow or infected.
Those came from ads, not from your computer. Sites that carry the name now are copies, and nothing ties them to the original. Treat any of them as unsafe:
- do not allow notifications
- do not install an extension
- do not run a file
If you want a YouTube video offline, use YouTube's own feature instead.
Is Youtubeconverter.io a virus?
No, the converter page was a website, and the reports we have show that it installed nothing by itself, so "Youtubeconverter.io virus" is not an accurate term. What people called a virus came from three things:
- notifications they allowed from the site
- ads and pop-ups that opened scam
- game or adult pages
- files or extensions taken from those ads
A notification permission is not a virus, yet it keeps delivering ads until you withdraw it in the browser settings. PCrisk files the name under adware. Only if you opened a file from an ad is there a program to remove: uninstall whatever was added that day, then run Microsoft Defender full and offline scans.
How do I get rid of youtubeconverter.io?
Work from the browser inward. First withdraw the notification permission for youtubeconverter.io and any look-alike address; the exact menu for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari is in the tabs on this page. Second, open the extensions page and delete anything you did not choose yourself.
Repeat both in every browser and profile you use. Third, only if an ad made you run a downloaded file, uninstall what was installed on that day (Settings > Apps > Installed apps) and run a Microsoft Defender full scan. Reset the browser last, and only if the start page or search engine was changed.
How do I stop Youtubeconverter.io notifications?
Take the site off the list of sites allowed to send notifications. The pages to open are chrome://settings/content/notifications in Chrome, edge://settings/content/notifications in Edge, Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Notifications > Settings in Firefox, and Safari > Settings > Websites > Notifications on a Mac.
Delete youtubeconverter.io and every address you do not recognise, then repeat in each browser and profile you use. The alerts stop immediately and nothing needs uninstalling. If they continue under other names, look at the extensions page, since an extension can raise alerts by itself.
Why does youtubeconverter.io not open?
In our test on 6 October 2026 the address failed with ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED, which means the browser got no address for the name. Public resolvers returned no address for youtubeconverter.io, and 1.1.1.1 said www.youtubeconverter.io does not exist.
The registry's record shows the domain still registered, paid until 4 October 2027, with no hold, so it has not been dropped. We do not know when it stopped answering or why, and we do not know whether it will come back. Sites with the name that do open are separate copies.
Why do I get "Your Mac is getting slow" notifications?
They are ads sent by a website you allowed to show notifications; your Mac measured nothing. Our 2019 picture shows this exact text in Chrome notifications from youtubeconverter.io, with "BOOST your Mac now by 2..." under it.
Open the browser's notification settings (Chrome: chrome://settings/content/notifications; Safari: Safari > Settings > Websites > Notifications), look at the site named in the notification and remove its permission. Do not click the notification.
If you already installed a booster or cleaner from one of these ads, move it to the Bin from Finder > Applications and remove unknown items under System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
Is it illegal to convert YouTube videos to MP3?
Opening a converter is not an offence; the problem is what you save with it. YouTube's terms allow downloads only through its own features, and most songs and films there belong to people who have not agreed to copies.
Your own uploads, Creative Commons videos and public-domain material are normally fine to save. Copying someone else's music video for yourself or to share is where copyright trouble begins, with any converter, and national laws differ. Safer routes are YouTube Premium's offline option and YouTube Studio for videos you uploaded.
Does Youtubeconverter.io track me?
Our old guide says its ads tracked visitors, but we cannot test that now, because the site does not load, so we cannot show what it collected.
Pages full of ads normally load trackers from advertising companies, which can learn your IP address and approximate location, the sites you visit and the ads you click, and use that to target you.
One ad in our 2019 picture advertised a concert in Lithuania, which suggests location was used. You cannot be tracked by a page that does not open; tracking from other sites, and from notifications you allowed, continues until you remove the permission.
Who owns youtubeconverter.io now?
The registry's record, read on 6 October 2026, lists MarkMonitor Inc. as the registrar and Google LLC as the registrant organisation, after a transfer on 2 March 2021. The domain was registered on 4 October 2018.
The record does not say why it was transferred or what became of the converter, and we cannot tell whether the people who ran it in 2019 were involved.
The registration therefore says nothing about other sites with a similar name: do not assume that any converter using the name has anything to do with Google or with the original site.
Will Fortect remove Youtubeconverter.io?
No program removes Youtubeconverter.io itself, because there is nothing on the PC to remove: the notifications come through a permission saved in the browser, and only the browser's settings take it away, as the steps above show.
What Fortect can do is check the rest of Windows. Its free scan looks for malware, unwanted programs and damaged system files, which is useful if you clicked the ads, downloaded something from the pages they opened, or are not sure what else changed on the PC.
If the scan finds nothing and the notifications stopped after you removed the permission, this problem is solved. Use Microsoft Defender as a second opinion whenever you have downloaded files from pages like these.
