So if I get one of these certificate warnings on my Windows 11 PC, best not just click past it then? Mine sometimes looks fine until the browser starts kicking off.
Blimey, if the real TikTok is still in the proper app store, why would anyone bother with a TikTok Pro download off a link? Sounds like a quick way to end up with a mess on your Windows PC.
Cheers, that helped. I checked Downloads, the browser downloads list, and the mod folder, then ran a Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Found the dodgy file and got rid of it.
Aye, that fake Minecraft mods bit sounds dodgy. If it’s on a Windows 11 PC, would checking the browser downloads first be the best place to start, or is there somewhere else people miss?
Cheers Daniel. I rang the bank first, got the card frozen, then reported it after. Much quicker that way. Deleted the email and checked Windows Security too.
Cheers, that did the trick. I reset the hosts file and the odd redirects stopped straight away. I also checked it in a couple of browsers, and it was the same nonsense in both before the fix.
Tried adding another recovery method, but it still looks the same on the screen. The codes page shows one option and no backup way in. What should I try next?
Mine was acting odd after a browser warning, and I keep wondering if resetting the hosts file is worth a go. Is that meant to fix pages going to the wrong place on Windows 11?
If there’s money involved, do you ring the bank first then tell the police after? I’m never sure with these dodgy emails on my Windows PC, and I’d rather not make a mess of it.
Cheers Martin, that makes sense. I’ve seen those pop-ups keep coming back and it’s a right pain. If I remove the dodgy site from notifications, that should stop the nonsense, yeah?
Aye, this is handy. One thing I always get muddled on is whether removing a program here also gets rid of the bits it leaves behind in the folders.
Aye, that makes sense. I’ve seen people miss the real file name because Windows trims the ending. Turning extensions on and checking Properties is a good habit.
Aye, I’d check Windows Update too after any odd pop-up. Had one on my Windows 11 box that looked daft, and I always worry there’s something sitting there waiting to go off.
I’ve got 2FA on my Windows account, but I still worry about the recovery codes. If I lose them, am I stuffed, or is there another way back in?
Had one like that last week on my Windows 11 box. Looked proper enough at first, but the address was dodgy. Did you check if the email had any odd spelling in it too?
Sounds like one of those fake scare pop-ups to me. I’d close the browser, then check if it keeps coming back after a restart. If it does, I’d be wondering if something got saved in the browser itself.
