Ok, this embarrassing but more than a year ago I was hit with a support scam. And yes they got money from me. After all said and done my laptop now won’t even boot up. So my question is, Is my laptop now nothing more than a paperweight or is there something that can be done to wake the sleeping? Oh they claimed they were a company working under Microsoft.

Unfortunately, it's quite easy to get tricked by scammers because they become better and better with social engineering. Criminals usually use the name of Microsoft to seem legitimate and get user's trust. Thus, it's always important not to take any harsh actions once someone calls you telling about detected computer virus or you receive a threatening pop-up. Keep in mind that real security alerts are delivered only by antivirus or anti-malware software that is installed on your PC.
However, it's hard to tell why your computer cannot boot after scammers attack. We can only suggest bringing it to the nearest IT support center and showing your laptop to the specialists. Maybe, there's a problem with hardware or other technical issues and they will manage to wake up your PC. Then, of course, you should check the system with professional security software and make sure that scammers haven't installed any malware.
