Searchpage.com starts infecting Mac users in 2017

Searchpage.com virus

Searchpage.com is annoying search site, which can easily show up on your computer out of nowhere. After that, it immediately affects all Internet browsers and starts annoying redirections to unknown websites. Never-ending ads in Wajam search results that it provides may contain links to deceptive external sites, so we advise being careful while exploring them.

What is more, recently this browser hijacker started bothering Mac users and causing redirects on Safari web browser, so Windows users are not the only targets of this potentially unwanted program (PUP).

Some of the external sites SearchPage virus seeks to promote may be just regular websites that seek to sell something. However, you should also beware that sometimes results generates by this search site may redirect you to insecure domain, which spreads malware[1]. Developers of this untrustworthy search engine mainly focus on generating pay-per-click revenue, so they are unlikely to endorse content of sites they advertise.

Besides, do not be fooled by the line saying “Results by Yahoo!” because you are not dealing with the real Yahoo search engine. Due to ads in search results and redirects that occur after clicking them, some security experts identify Search Page virus as a variant of Yahoo redirect virus.

If you looked closely at the tab name as soon as the described search site delivers its findings to you, you would see that you receive Wajam search results which means that they are altered and cluttered with suspicious third-party ads. Wajam should NOT be trusted as it is a well-known potentially unwanted program recognized by all security experts.[2] In fact, you might even find it in your computer when trying to remove SearchPage.com hijacker.

That’s why we have to repeat for another time that we recommend using more reputable search sites instead of the described one. The safest decision would be relying on Google, Yahoo and Bing. However, you might only get a chance to choose your preferred search engine or start page in your browser after Searchpage.com removal. You can initiate it using anti-spyware programs like Reimage or Plumbytes Anti-MalwareWebroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus (Mac users can opt for Malwarebytes Anti Malware).

Prevent browser hijackers from affecting your device

The described PUP is promoted with a help of shareware and freeware as a free addition. This method is quite unfair because you can easily miss this sentence that notifies about installation of this search site. If you want to avoid Searchpage.com, you have to uncheck the checkbox which agrees with the installation of this program. That can be done via Custom or Advanced installation mode, so make sure you do not opt for Default or Standard one.[3]

As soon as it enters the system, the potentially unwanted program installs SearchPage in Safari, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Typically, it adds its own start page and default search engine.

After that, it starts its annoying routine, which consists of altered search results, redirections to unknown websites and commercial ads. Clearly, this is done for a very simple reason – monetization.
