Dope-news.xyz tries to fool people into giving away their information

Dope-news.xyz is a bogus website that tries to make people believe they can win a gift card. Fraudsters use various social engineering techniques to get people to provide their personal information. After users receive an announcement that they supposedly won a $100 gift card, they are asked to fill out a form with contact and shipping information.

This may include the name, phone number, email, home address, and other data. Providing information to unknown sources can have devastating consequences. People might suffer from financial losses or even identity theft. Phone numbers and email addresses can be sold on underground forums and result in spam emails and calls.

The giveaway is presented as a “Sponsored Competition” but it is unclear who the fraudsters have in mind. They also do not show at which store the gift card can be redeemed. These are all the things you should look out for when trying to figure out if a giveaway is real.

Unfortunately, most giveaways and surveys you may see on the Internet are fake. If it is too good to be true – it probably is. It is very important to look at what is presented and take a step back. Think clearly and try not to be controlled by emotions or excitement.

By scrolling down, people can also see what looks like Facebook comments about the giveaway. Some people seem to have left comments about being devastated that they did not win a gift card. But with some testing, we found that no matter how many times you open the site or refresh it, the third try is always the “lucky” one. The comments are only there to make the scam seem more legitimate and cause less suspicion.

Dope-news.xyz is spread on shady websites through deceptive ads

Such survey scams target less IT-savvy users that do not really know much about the social engineering techniques used by modern-day scammers. But people can do certain things to avoid ending up on pages like Dope-news.xyz. Online scams are usually promoted on shady sites that engage in illegal activities because they are unregulated.

As a result, they are full of deceptive ads and sneaky redirects that users can click on accidentally. If you see a new tab open with an unknown page it is usually best to just exit and not interact with it. However, users may also get redirected to such pages automatically by a browser hijacker or adware.^[1]

Check the extension list

Google Chrome

• Open Google Chrome, click on the Menu (three vertical dots at the top-right corner) and select More tools > Extensions.
• In the newly opened window, you will see all the installed extensions. Uninstall all the suspicious plugins that might be related to the unwanted program by clicking Remove.

MS Edge:

1. Select Menu (three horizontal dots at the top-right of the browser window) and pick Extensions.
2. From the list, pick the extension and click on the Gear icon.
3. Click on Uninstall at the bottom.

MS Edge (Chromium)

• Open Edge and click select Settings > Extensions.
• Delete unwanted extensions by clicking Remove.

Mozilla Firefox

• Open Mozilla Firefox browser and click on the Menu (three horizontal lines at the top-right of the window).
• Select Add-ons.
• In here, select unwanted plugin and click Remove.

Safari

• Click Safari > Preferences…
• In the new window, pick Extensions.
• Select the unwanted extension and select Uninstall.

Windows 10/8:

3. From the list, find the entry of the suspicious program.
4. Right-click on the application and select Uninstall.
5. If User Account Control shows up, click Yes.
6. Wait till uninstallation process is complete and click OK.

Windows 7/XP:

1. Click on Windows Start > Control Panel located on the right pane (if you are Windows XP user, click on Add/Remove Programs).
2. In Control Panel, select Programs > Uninstall a program.
3. Pick the unwanted application by clicking on it once.
4. At the top, click Uninstall/Change.
5. In the confirmation prompt, pick Yes.
6. Click OK once the removal process is finished.

Mac:

1. From the menu bar, select Go > Applications.
2. In the Applications folder, look for all related entries.
3. Click on the app and drag it to Trash (or right-click and pick Move to Trash)

To fully remove an unwanted app, you need to access Application Support, LaunchAgents, and LaunchDaemons folders and delete relevant files:

1. Select Go > Go to Folder.

3. In the Application Support folder, look for any dubious entries and then delete them.
4. Now enter /Library/LaunchAgents and /Library/LaunchDaemons folders the same way and terminate all the related .plist files.
