FF AntiVir Monitoring – malicious extension trying to deceive Firefox users

Security researcher showing FF AntiVir Monitoring virus

FF AntiVir Monitoring virus is a malicious browser extension which hijacks your browser and displays numerous invasive ads and fake alerts. Although it was designed to look like a legitimate update for Mozilla Firefox browser, we can assure you that this scam has nothing to do with this company.

If you see countless FF AntiVir Monitoring ads and fake popups on your machine, it is incredibly likely that your computer is infected with adware.[1] These intruders often rely on questionable distribution methods and try to trick users into installing programs or updates that they normally would never download. Also, they can redirect you to suspicious websites that you would never visit.

Typically, users fall for installing the virus after being redirected to the malicious site which shows the dialog box saying “Add FF AntiVir Monitoring.” As soon as the user agrees with its installation, the full screen pops up asking to “Manually update Firefox” without the possibility of opting out of this offer. The blue screen reads the following:

Firefox requires manual update

This update is required to ensure that you are protected on the Internet
Install now

*This update is required
*Protect yourself immediately on the Internet
*Internet pages are automatically examined and possibly blocked
*Increased protection against malware and viruses

As you can see, this extension is presented as a great way to increase computer's security, so many users might fall for this offer. However, there is no doubt that this extension is malicious and can lead you to serious issues. Therefore, you should remove FF AntiVir Monitoring from your computer immediately. Reimage Reimage Cleaner Intego can help you to eliminate the virus quickly.

FF AntiVir Monitoring virus affects FirefoxFF AntiVir Monitoring virus is set to affect Firefox web browser

Main symptoms related to this fake add-on

As soon as the victim installs this browser add-on, the affected computer starts acting in the following ways:

  • The affected browser starts displaying various intrusive ads, banners, offers, deals, etc. on websites which typically wouldn't show them;
  • Redirects initiated by the affected browser can lead users to dubious websites where malicious JavaScripts can be used to download and install malware;
  • Virus alters the homepage, search engine, and new tab URL;
  • Browser settings cannot be set back to the previous state;
  • Non-personally identifiable/personal information might be collected and stolen;[2]
  • The computer performance and internet speed might become extremely poor.

Overall, FF AntiVir Monitoring virus removal should be your top priority as this malicious extension can harm your computer and compromise your internet security.

Users are tricked into installing a malicious extension against their will

In most cases, the affected web browser redirects users to the malicious website right after being abused by an adware-type program. These sites tend to show “Firefox requires manual update” dialog box which pushes the user to install the FF AntiVir Monitoring extension.

Clicking “Cancel” swaps it to add tick box which displays the following:

To display this page, Firefox must send information that will repeat any action (such as a search or order confirmation) that was performed earlier.

Therefore, if the user clicks “Resend,” the tab opens a full-screen alert and urges the victim to install the malicious extension.

To prevent adware causing such and similar fake alerts, be careful with bundling. This deceptive marketing campaign allows developers of free software to promote unwanted programs as optional components. Once the user uses Recommended/Quick settings, he/she fails to notice these components, so make sure you opt for Advanced or Custom settings.
