YT5s.com: is it safe? Ads, extension and notifications explained

In our check on 4 October 2026 the home page asked for no notification permission, opened no pop-ups and showed Google AdSense as its only ad network, so the page itself looked low risk.

We did not paste a link or download a file, so we cannot vouch for the result. The 2021 version of the site was different: it pushed a browser extension and its pages triggered notification prompts.

Ads vary by country and time, so use it in a browser where notifications are blocked, press only the download link, and never install an extension or run a program it offers. If you want no third-party site, use the platform's own save option.

No. YT5s.com is a website, and opening it does not install anything by itself. The word virus comes from our 2021 report, which described its extension offer and notification prompts. Those can lead to unwanted software if you accept them: an add-on can read what you browse, and a program from an ad can be adware.

If you never installed an extension, ran a downloaded program or clicked Allow, there is nothing to remove. If you did, remove the extension, take back the notification permission and run a full scan, as the sections above show. A file that arrives as .exe instead of .mp4 or .mp3 is a program, not a video.

No. On 4 October 2026 the home page carried a notice, dated 12/1/24, saying the site had officially discontinued support for downloading videos from YouTube. Its menu now lists an Instagram downloader, Instagram audio, a Facebook downloader and Facebook to MP3. The 2021 version offered YouTube to MP4 and MP3 and our old screenshot shows it.

A site or app that still promises YouTube downloads under the YT5s name is not the one we tested, so check the address bar. For YouTube, offline viewing in the app with YouTube Premium, or your own uploads from YouTube Studio, are the safe routes.

The extension page in 2021 told visitors to add MeddleMonkey and then press an install button for a userscript. Open your browser's extensions page:

• paste chrome://extensions in Chrome
• edge://extensions in Edge
• about:addons in Firefox

Click Remove on MeddleMonkey and on anything else you did not choose, including userscript managers installed the same day. In Safari, open Settings, Extensions, select the entry and click Uninstall.

Then take back the notification permission and clear the site data, using the steps in your browser's tab. If your start page or search engine also changed, use your browser's reset option.

Open your browser's notification settings and block the site. In Chrome, go to Settings, Privacy and security, Site settings, Notifications, find yt5s.com under Allowed to send notifications, click the three dots and choose Block or Remove. In Edge the path is Settings, Cookies and site permissions, Notifications.

In Firefox use Settings, Privacy & Security, Permissions, Notifications, Settings, and set the site to Block. In Safari, open Settings, Websites, Notifications and choose Deny. If notifications keep arriving after you block it, look for another site name in the same list, because ads open other pages.

A website can ask the browser for permission to send notifications, and the browser shows a box with Allow and Block. Our 2021 screenshot shows that box on the YT5s extension page.

Sites on advertising earn money by sending ads this way once you click Allow. On 4 October 2026 we saw no such request on the home page.

Chrome's help explains that you can block requests for all sites, or only for chosen ones, in Site settings. Clicking Block, or ignoring the box, sends nothing. Only Allow gives the site permission, and you can take it back at any time.

Visiting the site is legal. What you download decides whether you break rules. Instagram and Facebook videos are posted by people who own the copyright, and saving them with a third-party tool can go against the platform's terms and copyright law, whichever downloader you use.

Your own uploads, material you have permission for, or work released with an open licence are normally fine. Downloading someone else's music video, film or paid content to keep or share is where problems start. For content you want to keep legally, use the platform's Save feature, or YouTube Premium's offline download for YouTube.

The dialog is an ordinary advertising consent box, not malware. On 4 October 2026 it said your data may be processed for personalised ads and shared with 210 partners, and it offered Manage options and Consent. Consent agrees to that sharing, and Manage options lets you choose.

Nothing is installed by pressing either button. It does mean the site earns from tracking, so if you want less of it, open Manage options and refuse what you do not need, or use a browser profile with blocked cookies. The dialog is not a notification request and has nothing to do with the notification permission.

No program removes YT5s.com itself, because there is nothing on the PC to remove: the notifications come through a permission saved in the browser, and only the browser's settings take it away, as the steps above show.

If the scan finds nothing and the notifications stopped after you removed the permission, this problem is solved. Use Microsoft Defender as a second opinion whenever you have downloaded files from pages like these.
