How to remove Qqqw ransomware

A step-by-step removal guide for affected devices. Follow the verified procedure below — most readers complete it in under 10 minutes.

Lucia Danes · Virus researcher

Qqqw ransomware is a virus designed to encrypt all personal data on the computer and then demand ransom for the alleged recovery

Qqqw ransomware

Qqqw virus belongs to the category of ransomware and is considered one of the most dangerous threats because this type of threat involves money extortion. This malware affects files directly, demanding payments in Bitcoin. Victims should be transferring money into criminals' accounts as soon as possible.

This should be exchanged into a decryption tool or key for the locked files. However, the threat actor group is focused on money, and your data is only the worry for you. Criminals are not trusted, and cryptocurrency extortion methods can lead to much more than affected common data.

Once inside the system, the Qqqw file virus encrypts all personal pictures, videos, documents, archives, and other files by using a strong encryption algorithm, which also appends a .qqqw extension in the process. Victims can no longer access these files and require a unique key that is in possession of cybercriminals behind the ransomware. The creators of the ransomware deliver the message via a text file that states the possible option of recovering those files – paying the ransom.

The virus drops a ransom note _readme.txt – instructions from cybercriminals. It explains to victims what happened to their files and claims that the only method to return them is by paying a ransom for a decryption tool. For negotiation purposes, crooks also provide emails support@sysmail.ch, helprestoremanager@airmail.cc.

Qqqw ransomware is a cryptovirus that belongs to a malware family known as Djvu virus. This malware encrypts all the important files and restricts access to them, asking the payment then. There are many other issues triggered by the infection too. The system gets slower due to additional processes and programs added to the machine. You need to take care of the device and eliminate the virus as soon as possible.

More about the ransomware infection

While it is true that Qqqw virus files require a unique decryption key to unlock them, experts[1] recommend not paying the ransom, as cybercriminals might not keep their promises, resulting in financial losses. Threat actors ask for $980 in the form of Bitcoin. These criminals even offer a 50% discount in the first 72 hours, so people are more eager to pay the demanded sum.

Nonetheless, we do not recommend even contacting the attackers because they might not deliver the required decryption tool. Check out the alternative methods we provide below instead. Consider this a serious threat because contact between you and the virus creators can lead to more issues than the file-locking. The double-extortion method is often used by these bigger ransomware families these days.[2]

Name Qqqw ransomware
Type Cryptovirus, file locking virus
Malware family STOP ransomware virus/ Djvu virus
Extension Files appended with .qqqw extension
Ransom note  _readme.txt  is informing about the possible solutions and options
Ransom amount $490/ $980
Distribution Files get included in pirated software packages, attached to emails with spam messages and deceptive content
Issues The infection locks files, encrypts them, and makes users believe that paying is the only solution. The system gets also affected by the additional processes
Contact emails support@sysmail.ch, helprestoremanager@airmail.cc
File recovery  If no backups are available, recovering data is almost impossible. Nonetheless, we suggest you try the alternative methods that could help you in some cases – we list them below
Removal  Perform a full system scan with powerful security software, such as SpyHunterCombo Cleaner, MalwarebytesMalwarebytes to remove the infection properly
System fix Threats can affect the Windows system further by causing errors, crashes, lag, and other stability issues. You can repair those problems with FortectIntego

Qqqw ransomware demands money once those files get locked. The encryption process can be quickly started once the infection finds its way into the system. The army-grade algorithm allows the threat to change the original code of the document, photo, video files, so the piece is unopenable and cannot be used or recovered. At least it cannot be recovered easily.

Qqqw virus

These criminals can claim to have the only and the best option for the victims and offer the discount, test decryption for all the victims just to fake the trust and legitimacy of the program creators. Once those files are locked and the ransom note is delivered to the system, the threat is done with the main activities. You need to take care of the machine and stop further damage that Qqqw file virus can cause.

Partial decryption options

Qqqw ransomware is coming from the family that releases the new versions every week. The latest variants launched after August 2019 cannot be easily decrypted, so files affected by the threats like this can be damaged permanently. Encryption is a difficult process, and these newest variants like Vfgj or Maak are based on advanced techniques.

This is because online IDs are primarily used with newer releases. A new type of key that forms during the encryption makes decryption much harder than before, and it's only possible with help from someone who has managed to get their hands on the proper decryption tool and keys. Those are law enforcement agents or research.

Online IDs get formed for each of the devices affected by Qqqw ransomware. Offline keys are unique for the version only, not each machine that is encrypted. If someone gets one or more offline keys, data encrypted by the threat can be recovered for many other people that got the same version on the machine. This is how the previously useful decryption tool was developed, so you can still try to recover files.

If your computer got infected with one of the Djvu variants, you should try using Emsisoft decryptor for Djvu/STOP. It is important to mention that this tool will not work for everyone – it only works if data was locked with an offline ID due to malware failing to communicate with its remote servers.

Even if your case meets this condition, somebody from the victims has to pay criminals, retrieve an offline key, and then share it with security researchers at Emsisoft. As a result, you might not be able to restore the encrypted files immediately. Thus, if the decryptor says your data was locked with an offline ID but cannot be recovered currently, you should try later. You also need to upload a set of files – one encrypted and a healthy one to the company's servers before you proceed.

  • Download the app from the official Emsisoft website.
  • After pressing Download button, a small pop-up at the bottom, titled decrypt_STOPDjvu.exe should show up – click it.
  • If User Account Control (UAC) message shows up, press Yes.
  • Agree to License Terms by pressing Yes.

  • After Disclaimer shows up, press OK.
  • The tool should automatically populate the affected folders, although you can also do it by pressing Add folder at the bottom.
  • Press Decrypt.

From here, there are three available outcomes:

  1. Decrypted!” will be shown under files that were decrypted successfully – they are now usable again.
  2. Error: Unable to decrypt file with ID:” means that the keys for this version of the virus have not yet been retrieved, so you should try later.
  3. This ID appears to be an online ID, decryption is impossible” – you are unable to decrypt files with this tool.

Remove the infection with proper tools

The infection can be active for a while before your data gets locked and marked with the .qqqw appendix. You cannot deal with the infection yourself easily because the infiltration process is quick and silent, so persistence is ensured. However, you can remove the Qqqw ransomware with that powerful tool based on successful detection rates.[3]

The best tools for malware termination are security programs or anti-malware applications like SpyHunterCombo Cleaner or MalwarebytesMalwarebytes. You can be sure that these tools scan the machine and can find infection pieces. Removal then follows, and the machine gets cleared from any possible threats. Do not skip these steps because the machine might get damaged by the infection behind your back.

Qqqw ransomware infection means that the system is changed to operate differently. For example, an infection can alter the Windows registry database, damage vital bootup, and other sections, delete or corrupt DLL files, etc. Once a system file is damaged by malware, antivirus software is not capable of doing anything about it, leaving it just the way it is. Consequently, users might experience performance, stability, and usability issues, to the point where a full Windows reinstallation is required.

Therefore, we highly recommend using a one-of-a-kind, patented technology of FortectIntego repair. Not only can it fix virus damage after the infection, but it is also capable of removing malware that has already broken into the system thanks to several engines used by the program. Besides, the application is also capable of fixing various Windows-related issues that are not caused by malware infections, for example, Blue Screen errors, freezes, registry errors, damaged DLLs, etc.

  • Download the application by clicking on the link above
  • Click on the ReimageRepair.exe
    Reimage download
  • If User Account Control (UAC) shows up, select Yes
  • Press Install and wait till the program finishes the installation process.
  • The analysis of your machine will begin immediatelyReimage scan
  • Once complete, check the results – they will be listed in the Summary
  • You can now click on each of the issues and fix them manually
  • If you see many problems that you find difficult to fix, we recommend you purchase the license and fix them automatically.Reimage results

Other possible options

Virus removal is a very important process because threats can damage your machine and files. It's crucial to note that virus removal isn't just about getting rid of threats, but also includes data recovery in order for you to restore those encrypted pieces. This is not easy and removal is not the same as decryption or file repair. You need proper tools and techniques for that.

Qqqw ransomware virus can damage the data permanently and it mainly happens when files are recovered from the backups or storage services, but the ransomware is still running on the machine. The file-locking virus can and should be eliminated before any file repair procedures.

It is understandable that your main worry is those encrypted files, but make sure to take care of the security of your machine and performance first. You must repair data and remove the infection. That can be difficult due to disabled functions and failure of programs, so you might benefit from Safe Mode with Networking and the removal process launched during that stage.

As for the file recovery after the Qqqw file virus infection, the options are limited yet possible. Since many users do not prepare proper data backups prior to being attacked by ransomware, they might often lose access to their files permanently. Paying criminals is also very risky, as they might not fulfill the promises and never send back the required decryption tool.

While this might sound terrible, not all is lost – data recovery software might be able to help you in some situations (it highly depends on the encryption algorithm used, whether ransomware managed to complete the programmed tasks, etc.). Since there are thousands of different ransomware strains, it is immediately impossible to tell whether third-party software will work for you.

Therefore, we suggest trying regardless of which ransomware attacked your computer. Before you begin, several pointers are important while dealing with this situation:

  • Since the encrypted data on your computer might permanently be damaged by security or data recovery software, you should first make backups of it – use a USB flash drive or another storage.
  • Only attempt to recover your files using this method after you perform a scan with anti-malware software.

Install data recovery software

  1. Download Data Recovery Pro.
  2. Double-click the installer to launch it.
  3. Follow on-screen instructions to install the software.Install program
  4. As soon as you press Finish, you can use the app.
  5. Select Everything or pick individual folders where you want the files to be recovered from.
  6. Press Next.
  7. At the bottom, enable Deep scan and pick which Disks you want to be scanned.Select Deep scan
  8. Press Scan and wait till it is complete.
  9. You can now pick which folders/files to recover – don't forget you also have the option to search by the file name!
  10. Press Recover to retrieve your files.Recover files
