Adfoc.us virus. How to remove? (Uninstall guide)

removal by Jake Doevan - - | Type: Browser hijacker

The overview of Adfoc.us virus

The Adfoc.us virus is known as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) which is categorized as a browser hijacker.[1] Users can install this application directly and indirectly. However, once it gets inside the system, it starts causing inconveniences, tracking data and increasing the risk of encountering serious computer infection. The Adfocus application is presented as short URL redirection service that allows generating revenue from clicks. Thus, this tool might look useful for content creators who are interested in making passive incomes. However, many users complain that this service does not work and they did not receive any money. But it’s just only one reason why you should not trust this tool. As you already know, there are two ways how this browser hijacker can infiltrate the system. Direct download is offered on the official website; however, the indirect installation makes this tool even more questionable.[2] This app might spread in the software bundles; thus, the hijack might be unexpected. Signs of the infection might include changed browser’s homepage, set another search engine or modified new tab address.

AdFocus also offers advertising services. Thus, it might have feature related to the ad-supported program. Indeed, developers reveal that they share commercial content and display ads to all their users’ network. Thus, if this PUP appeared on your computer, you might also notice an increased amount of online ads and be constantly redirected to the sponsored third-party websites. Not only Adfoc.us redirect issues are annoying but might also put computer’s and your privacy at risk. Some of the third-party ads might lead to the dangerous websites, or you might be accidentally redirected to the tech support scam[3] or phishing site.[4] As you can see, having a potentially unwanted program on the computer increases the chances to catch dangerous cyber threats, such as ransomware. So, Adfoc.us removal should not be delayed. If you noticed that your browser acts strangely, run a full system scan with Reimage or another reputable anti-malware program, and get rid of all suspicious entries.

However, there’s another reason to remove Adfoc.us from the device, and this one is related to your privacy. Just like the majority of potentially unwanted programs, this one might also track information about the users. Indeed, in the Privacy Policy, it is noted that this application collects browsing-related information about the user with the help of cookies.[5] What is more, developers of so-called Adfoc.us virus might share collected information with third-parties in order to provide people useful information. Undoubtedly, they have in mind even more online ads. Nevertheless, developers claim they do not disclose personally identifiable details; various third-party ads might cause lots of problems. Thus, if you were looking for the URL shortener, we highly suggest searching for a more reliable app.

When did the hijack occur?

We have already told that AdFocus app might be accessed from the official website. However, this app might be downloaded from the Google Play Store. These distribution methods are transparent and have nothing concerning. However, another method is quite shady and allows entering the system unnoticed. Thus, Adfoc.us hijack might occur when users download various free programs from the Internet. Potentially unwanted programs often travel in the software packages. If users do not “unpack” new program before installing it, all additional applications step inside the system. You can “unpack” and see what third-party apps are offered to you by choosing Advanced/Custom installation settings. One of the steps provides the list of extra applications, and you have to opt the out. Meanwhile, Quick/Recommended settings do not provide this function and install all additional programs by default.
