Convert2mp3: shut down in 2019, what its name means now

No page that uses the name Convert2mp3 today is safe to use, and the original service no longer exists. Its operator shut it down on 21 June 2019 after a settlement with the record industry.

On 5 October 2026 convert2mp3.tv forwarded us to a betting page on one visit and to a fake Browser Security Check on the next, convert2mp3.net timed out and convert2mp3.cc was parked. One test cannot clear an address, because such pages change by country, device and time. The harm comes from allowing notifications or running files.

Convert2mp3 was shut down worldwide on 21 June 2019. IFPI and the German music association BVMI announced that the Germany-based operator had agreed to stop, to hand over the Convert2MP3 domains and not to infringe record companies' rights again, after legal action in Germany.

A German court had earlier granted a preliminary injunction against the service. Copies with the name have appeared on other addresses since, often with aggressive ads; the registry record of convert2mp3.tv starts only on 16 October 2024.

Convert2mp3 lost its case in Germany and closed, so the original is not an option. The record industry said it extracted audio from streamed music videos and offered it as free permanent downloads, which it called large-scale and sustained copyright violation; the injunction rested on circumventing technological protection measures.

Opening a converter site is not itself illegal; what you convert decides whether you break copyright or the platform's terms, so save only your own uploads and licensed or public-domain files.

No, nothing shows that the two belong together. The .net address is the original service, registered on 10 January 2009 and closed in 2019. The .tv registration begins on 16 October 2024, and the screenshot in our 2021 guide shows the name on .tv under an earlier owner.

On 5 October 2026 the .tv address forwarded us to two different pages while .net timed out and .cc was parked. Treat each address on its own, and check the address bar before you paste a link.

Take the site's permission back in every browser you use, because each browser and profile keeps its own list. In Chrome open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications, find the entry that names convert2mp3, open its three-dot menu and choose Block or Remove.

Edge and Firefox have the same list; the tabs above give the paths. Nothing needs uninstalling for notifications alone. If ads keep coming, check your extensions and run a full scan, because then something is installed.

Treat it as unwanted. Our 2021 guide reported that two antivirus engines on VirusTotal flagged the Windows program the site offered, but we kept neither the file nor its hash, so we cannot confirm that today, and in 2026 we downloaded nothing from any address.

A real MP3 converter needs no program, and installers from download pages often carry extra software. If you ran it, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, run a Microsoft Defender full scan and then the offline scan, and reset your browser.

It is a fake page, not a check made by your browser or by Windows. On 5 October 2026 it appeared on our second visit to convert2mp3.tv, listing Adware Shield as not active and Phishing Guard as disabled beside a red Enable protection button.

A website cannot read whether your browser's protection is on, so the list is invented to make you press the button, which leads to an installer, an extension or a notification request. Close the tab. If you pressed it and something installed, follow the steps for running a file.

Use the platform's own option or a source that publishes the audio itself. YouTube Studio has an Audio Library of free music with the licence shown for every track, and streaming services let you download music for offline listening inside their apps.

For your own videos, download the original from YouTube Studio. Third-party converters keep disappearing, and those that remain live on aggressive advertising, so if you use one, keep notifications and pop-ups blocked in that browser profile and open only an audio file.

No program removes Convert2mp3 itself, because there is nothing on the PC to remove: the notifications come through a permission saved in the browser, and only the browser's settings take it away, as the steps above show.
