What ICQ Zap is
ICQ Zap is yet another AOL parasite.
However, it belongs to a different kind of AOL infections if compared to Omerstroke. Some of the security vendors describe it as an ICQ flooder. This name refers to the software that is aimed at overloading Internet connection.
ICQ Zap infection sends a colossal amount of messages with random UINs to a designated ICQ user. Such operations can have severe consequences on computer's connection speed and overall performance. On top of that, this intruder can even disconnect the computer from the Internet entirely and initiate an complete system crash.

What is ICQ Zap AOL
AOL is a type of computer infections that can cause severe damage both to a computer and computer user's privacy.
Although all AOL parasites are targeting the users of AOL instant messenger services, including AIM and ICQ, different infections have different purposes. While some of the AOL parasites are used for tracking and transmitting passwords, an AOL that is also categorized as a Flooder is something different.
AOL Flooder seeks to overloads connection this decreasing connection speed and causing severe damage to the computer's performance. In order to achieve the purpose, ICQ Zap infection typically uses several methods, such as HTTP overload attacks, causing a Denial of Service attacks, Ping of Death attacks, fast pinging and so on.
How to uninstall ICQ Zap
How to remove ICQ Zap
Uninstall it and remove the extras it installed, then scan for the files you downloaded with it.
Step 1: Uninstall ICQ Zap
ICQ Zap is removed like any other program, from the list of installed apps. In Windows 11 that is Settings > Apps > Installed apps, in Windows 10 Settings > Apps > Apps & features, and in both you can also use Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Select ICQ Zap, click Uninstall and follow the uninstaller to the end. Then look at the entries just above and below it when the list is sorted by date: bundled programs install at the same minute.

Step 2: Remove it from startup
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and select Startup apps (Windows 11) or the Startup tab (Windows 10). Disable entries you do not recognise, especially ones with no publisher or with a name that copies a Windows component.
Right-click an entry and choose Open file location to see where it runs from: programs in

Step 3: Delete the folders left behind
Uninstalling often leaves the program's folders, and some threats reinstall themselves from them.
Press Windows + R, type
%LocalAppData%and press Enter, then do the same for%AppData%and %ProgramData%, and look for folders named after ICQ Zap, its publisher or created on the day the problem started.Delete those folders, and check
C:\Program FilesandC:\Program Files (x86)too.If Windows says a file is in use, end it in Task Manager or delete the folder after a restart in Safe Mode. The folders are the same in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Step 4: Scan the PC, then run the offline scan
A scan finds the parts of ICQ Zap that the manual steps cannot see. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, start a Full scan and quarantine what it reports.
Follow it with Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) > Scan now, which restarts the PC and checks the disk while Windows and the malware are not running.
It takes about 15 minutes and works the same in Windows 11 and Windows 10. If either scan finds something, run the full scan again after removal until it comes back clean.

What precautionary measures can be taken to prevent AOL parasite infection?
Security experts distinguish three methods that are applied for distribution of AOL parasites, including ICQ Zap.
These are the following:
- software bundling
- fake Windows errors
- Trojan horses
That's why it may be difficult to prevent AOL infections, especially if your PC's security is low, and its vulnerabilities can easily be exploited. In order to avoid computer infections, in general, it's advisable to install a powerful anti-malware and keep it up-to-date. Besides, avoid visiting fake websites and do not click on questionable Windows error messages.

What are the remedies for ICQ Zap AOL Parasite?
It's difficult to recognize and detect AOL Parasites in general.
ICQ Zap is not an exception. Unlike traditional software, this pest cannot be removed using a built-in uninstaller or some other convenient way of removal. This pest can reinstall them even after the seemingly successful removal. Only a full system check will grant that all AOL-related files have been detected and removed.
Questions about ICQ Zap
Can I safely uninstall ICQ Zap?
If you did not install ICQ Zap yourself and it is not part of your hardware or a program you rely on, yes. Uninstalling an unwanted program does not harm Windows. Before you do, search the exact name and publisher to be sure it is not a driver tool, a printer utility or a game launcher with an odd name.
Then remove it from Settings, Apps, Installed apps. Ignore any offers or warnings in its uninstaller about losing protection or performance. Afterwards check Startup apps and your browsers for leftovers, and restart once to confirm that it does not reinstall itself.
ICQ Zap came back after I uninstalled it. Why?
Something else is reinstalling it. Common causes are a second program from the same publisher, a scheduled task that downloads it again, or a browser extension that keeps prompting for it. Sort Installed apps by install date and uninstall each entry from the same day that you did not choose.
Then open Task Scheduler and look in the Task Scheduler Library for tasks with updater-style names that you do not recognise. Check Startup apps in Task Manager too. If ICQ Zap still returns, start Windows in Safe Mode, uninstall it there and run a Microsoft Defender offline scan, which looks for loaders that ordinary scans can miss.
Does ICQ Zap collect my data?
Nobody has analysed ICQ Zap yet, so there is no confirmed answer. Programs in this category often collect usage data, browsing history or device details and share them with advertisers, and their privacy policies usually allow it.
The sign reported, ICQ Zap in the list of installed apps, does not by itself show data theft, and nothing points to passwords or files being taken.
If you want to be careful, clear the browser's cookies after removal and review which apps may run in the background. Change passwords only if you also see signs of something more serious, such as unknown sign-ins or messages sent from your accounts.
Does ICQ Zap use a lot of resources?
It depends on the program, and no measurements have been published for ICQ Zap. The sign reported is ICQ Zap in the list of installed apps. Check for yourself: open Task Manager, find its process and watch the CPU, memory and network columns for a minute while the PC is otherwise idle.
Steady use with nothing open is a strong reason to remove it. Even if it seems light, it may run more processes under other names, so sort Installed apps by date and remove anything else from the same day. Then restart and compare.
Why does ICQ Zap reinstall itself?
Programs like ICQ Zap are often installed with an updater or a companion app whose job is to keep them present. When you uninstall the main program, the helper downloads it again at the next scheduled run or restart.
Find the helper by sorting Installed apps by date and by checking Task Scheduler and Services for entries with the same name or publisher. Remove them all, then delete leftover folders. Turning on Potentially unwanted app blocking in Windows Security also stops many reinstall attempts.
How do I stop programs like ICQ Zap from installing?
Turn on Potentially unwanted app blocking in Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection settings, with both Block apps and Block downloads checked. Download programs from the developer's own site or the Microsoft Store, choose Custom in installers and untick extra offers, and treat large download buttons on file sites as ads.
Apps from the Microsoft Store are checked by Microsoft and uninstall cleanly. Keep real-time protection on, so that bundled offers flagged as unwanted are stopped before they install.
ICQ Zap has no uninstall option. What now?
Some unwanted programs leave no entry in Installed apps on purpose. Find the program's files instead:
- open Task Manager while ICQ Zap in the list of installed apps is visible
- right-click the process
- choose Open file location
End the process, then look in that folder for an uninstall file. If there is none, delete the folder after checking that it holds nothing you need.
Before deleting, remove the startup entry and any scheduled task that points to it, otherwise it may be recreated. A restart and a full scan in Windows Security finish the job and catch files stored elsewhere.
How do I know if I need ICQ Zap?
Ask three questions. Did you install it on purpose? Have you ever opened it?
Does anything you use depend on it? If the answers are no, you do not need it. The sign that brought you here, ICQ Zap in the list of installed apps, suggests it arrived without a clear choice.
Programs bundled with free software rarely do anything their host program needs. Uninstall it, restart, and see whether anything you rely on stops working. If nothing does, which is the usual outcome, you can forget about it.
How long does removing ICQ Zap take?
Usually ten to twenty minutes. Uninstalling takes a minute; checking the Startup list, Task Scheduler and the browsers takes the rest. A full scan in Windows Security can add half an hour on a large drive, but you can keep using the PC while it runs.
Restart at the end and watch for ICQ Zap in the list of installed apps. If it is gone after a day of normal use, you are finished. If it returns, plan for an offline scan, which restarts the PC and takes around fifteen minutes.
