What is News-kotofa.cc ads?

News-kotofa.cc makes people enable pop-up ads using deception tactics

News-kotofa.cc was created by fraudsters to generate revenue

News-kotofa.cc is a bogus website that tries to fool people into subscribing push notifications to generate revenue. It tries to convince people that they need to confirm that they are not robots by pressing the “Allow” button. In reality, they give the site permission to spam them with annoying pop-up ads.

Push notification spam pages often use rogue advertising networks to display ads for them. As a result, links embedded in the pop-ups can lead to dangerous pages that can make people provide their personal information or download PUPs (potentially unwanted programs),^[1] and malware.

Sometimes people also start seeing ads promoting adult and gambling sites. If there are other people using the affected machine, especially children, you should take care of the threat as soon as possible as they can be exposed to inappropriate content.

In the past years, push notification spam pages have grown in numbers significantly as they can be quite profitable for fraudsters. If they spread it through the Internet well enough, they can generate revenue with pay-per-click advertising. Such pages appear and disappear every day. You can encounter pages that display deceptive messages like:

All of these messages can remind users of a captcha verification process but there are significant differences. A legitimate captcha verification usually asks users to identify certain objects in pictures, like crosswalks or bicycles. You should never have to choose between “Block” and “Allow” to confirm that you are not a robot or be able to access some type of content.

In order to avoid such pages in the future, do not browse through pages that engage in illegal activities. Such sites are unregulated and full of deceptive ads and sneaky redirects. Illegal streaming platforms are especially unsafe and can easily lead people to push notification spam pages.

Google Chrome (desktop):

1. Open Google Chrome browser and go to Menu > Settings.

MS Edge:

1. Open Microsoft Edge, and click the Settings and more button (three horizontal dots) at the top-right of the window.
2. Select Settings and then go to Advanced.
3. Under Website permissions, pick Manage permissions and select the URL in question.
4. Toggle the switch to the left to turn notifications off on Microsoft Edge.

MS Edge (Chromium):

1. Open Microsoft Edge, and go to Settings.
2. Select Site permissions.
3. Go to Notifications on the right.
4. Under Allow, you will find the unwanted entry.
5. Click on More actions and select Block.

6. Click OK once the removal process is finished.

Mac:

1. From the menu bar, select Go > Applications.
2. In the Applications folder, look for all related entries.

To entirely remove an unwanted app, you need to access Application Support, LaunchAgents, and LaunchDaemons folders and delete relevant files:

1. Select Go > Go to Folder.

3. In the Application Support folder, look for any suspicious entries and then delete them.
4. Now enter /Library/LaunchAgents and /Library/LaunchDaemons folders the same way and terminate all the related .plist files.
