Mordor ransomware is the new virtual extortion tool that is based on HiddenTear virus

Mordor virus is a name of yet another ransomware, which is based on open-source HiddenTear ransomware[1]. Once it gets an opportunity to enter victim’s computer system, it encrypts all files with AES-256 encryption and appends .mordor file extensions to files. Following that, the virus creates a ransom note, entitles it simply as READ_ME.html, and saves it on the desktop. Although this virus is very new, researchers say that it is going to be a disastrous one because it was noticed Blank Slate malspam campaign[2], which earlier was pushing Cerber ransomware[3], now is used for the described virus’ distribution. It is also believed that this particular virus is directly related to Karmen RaaS virus[3], which is being sold as an extortion tool on the dark web.
Mordor ransomware payment page

Once Mordor ransomware encrypts all of the victim’s files, it automatically launches the ransom note, which opens as an “INFO” page in default web browser. The web page shows in a distorted form, but the victim can see a complete version via Tor browser, which can be downloaded through a link provided by the ransom note. Then the victim has to use a special .onion URL to access individual trustmordor[.]pw website created by ransomware authors. This site requires entering victim’s ID in order to log in and allows the victim choose between English, Japan, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese, French and German languages. As any other ransomware, it asks the victim to pay a ransom in order to get the decryption key and a decoder. The page suggests fetching some Bitcoins via LocalBitcoins service, and sending 0.07066407 BTC, which equals to approximately 104 USD to criminals’ Bitcoin wallet. There is also a QR code on the page.

The Mordor ransomware is obviously created by someone who is a fan of the Lord of the Rings movie since the virus is entitled after a Sauron-controlled region from the fictional world. Sauron is the character whose eye is used as a decoration in the payment page. Despite all scary details, we advise victims not to pay the ransom because a decryption tool might be created soon – malware analysts are already working on it. Until then, you might want to remove Mordor ransomware from your computer using helpful malware removal tools such as Reimage Reimage Cleaner Intego. Full instructions on how to eliminate this virus can be found below this article.

Questions about Mordor ransomware virus

Mordor Virus mainly distributed via Blank Slate campaign

Mordor ransomware is surprisingly distributed using a powerful malspam campaign known as “Blank Slate.[4]” The reason why is it surprising is that usually HiddenTear-based viruses are not dispersed using measures used by most prevalent ransomware viruses such as Cerber. Security researchers also noticed that both viruses were sent from the same domain, which means that the new virus is, of course, being distributed by the same criminals responsible for Cerber’s distribution. To protect yourself from such malspam attacks[5], we suggest you stay away from emails that deliver questionable attachments or URLs. Emails related to this spam campaign usually provide .zip attachments with rich text format files that are typically named as [random digits].doc. These files are designed to exploit the CVE-2017-0199 vulnerability.

Mordor ransomware removal steps

Bonus: Recover your data

Guide which is presented above is supposed to help you remove Mordor from your computer. To recover your encrypted files, we recommend using a detailed guide prepared by security experts.

If you don’t have a data backup, it won’t be easy to restore your files since malware researchers haven’t managed to create a decrypter for the new ransomware yet. Until then, these data recovery tricks can be used.

If your files are encrypted by Mordor, you can use several methods to restore them:

Recover data with Data Recovery Pro software

Data Recovery Pro software is helpful when you need to restore deleted, missing, or corrupted files. Remember – without having the decryption key, this software won’t seem to be that effective.

  • Download Data Recovery Pro;
  • Follow the steps of Data Recovery Setup and install the program on your computer;
  • Launch it and scan your computer for files encrypted by Mordor ransomware;
  • Restore them.

ShadowExplorer trick

Volume Shadow Copies is kind of a backup of your files that is stored on the system, therefore if the virus manages to infect the computer and get administrator’s rights, these copies will be deleted. However, even computer programs make mistakes, so we suggest you run Shadow Explorer to see if there are any Shadow Copies left that can be used for data recovery.

  • Download Shadow Explorer (;
  • Follow a Shadow Explorer Setup Wizard and install this application on your computer;
  • Launch the program and go through the drop down menu on the top left corner to select the disk of your encrypted data. Check what folders are there;
  • Right-click on the folder you want to restore and select “Export”. You can also select where you want it to be stored.

Finally, you should always think about the protection of crypto-ransomwares. In order to protect your computer from Mordor and other ransomwares, use a reputable anti-spyware, such as Reimage Reimage Cleaner Intego, SpyHunter 5Combo Cleaner or Malwarebytes

Access your website securely from any location

When you work on the domain, site, blog, or different project that requires constant management, content creation, or coding, you may need to connect to the server and content management service more often. It is a hassle when your website is protected from suspicious connections and unauthorized IP addresses.

The best solution for creating a tighter network could be a dedicated/fixed IP address. If you make your IP address static and set to your device, you can connect to the CMS from any location and do not create any additional issues for server or network manager that need to monitor connections and activities. This is how you bypass some of the authentications factors and can remotely use your banking accounts without triggering suspicious with each login.

VPN software providers like Private Internet Access can help you with such settings and offer the option to control the online reputation and manage projects easily from any part of the world. It is better to clock the access to your website from different IP addresses. So you can keep the project safe and secure when you have the dedicated IP address VPN and protected access to the content management system.

Backup files for the later use, in case of the malware attack

Computer users can suffer from data losses due to cyber infections or their own faulty doings. Ransomware can encrypt and hold files hostage, while unforeseen power cuts might cause a loss of important documents. If you have proper up-to-date backups, you can easily recover after such an incident and get back to work. It is also equally important to update backups on a regular basis so that the newest information remains intact – you can set this process to be performed automatically.

When you have the previous version of every important document or project you can avoid frustration and breakdowns. It comes in handy when malware strikes out of nowhere. Use Data Recovery Pro for the data restoration process.
