Greenconvert.net is a free YouTube downloader and converter that has run since 2021 and now hands visitors on to greenconvert.ai. It installed nothing and opened no pop-up on our October 2026 visit; the things to watch are its ads and redirects, which our 2022 report warned about and which one visit cannot rule out.

What Greenconvert.net is and how it works
Greenconvert.net is a website, not a program: it is a YouTube downloader and converter that turns a video link into an MP3, MP4 or WebM file. Visiting it installs nothing; the risks come from the ads and pages around it.

In 2022 the page had a box for the address of a YouTube video. In October 2026 the page we saw had no box of its own: its buttons, Start Green Conversion and Go to greenconvert.ai, lead to a different domain.

The site says it offers MP3 (up to 320 kbps), MP4 up to 1080p and WebM, and a trimmer for cutting songs. These are its own claims; we did not test them.

Converters like this exist because YouTube shows no download button for most videos, and it earns from the ads shown while you watch. A saved copy plays without them, which is why people search for these sites, mostly to listen to music without ads. The sites pay for themselves with advertising, and ad space on converters is often sold on to networks that also serve scam pages.
Is Greenconvert.net dangerous?
Our test on 6 October 2026
We opened the home page the way a visitor does: a clean desktop Chromium profile in Europe. We did not follow the buttons to greenconvert.ai, paste a link or download a file, so we describe the page and its connections, not the downloads.

Our report: a YouTube downloader with deceptive ads
The home page was a plain YouTube downloader with tabs for YouTube Downloader, YouTube to MP3 and YouTube to MP4, and three numbered steps. Our report warned that ads on the page could be misleading and that clicks on the page could redirect to unsafe sites. We have no capture of such an ad.

The page also explained how to download a video on a computer, on Android and on iPhone, where it told readers to install the Documents by Readdle app and open the site inside it.

The domain the page now calls its official app was registered on 24 February 2026 and last changed on 12 August 2026. We have not found who runs it and do not know whether the same owner runs both.
October 2026
Our new check: a hand-off page
The English page now describes GreenConvert as a "sustainable" converter and sends the visitor on with two buttons. No notification request, pop-up or ad network appeared on our visit.

How people end up on Greenconvert.net
Most people arrive on purpose, by searching for a way to turn a YouTube video into MP3 or MP4. The other ways in are redirects and adware.

Watching or listening without the ads is also how the video's makers earn; a converted copy takes that income away. That is the reason YouTube's terms allow downloads only where YouTube itself offers them.

Visiting the site installs nothing, so there is normally nothing to find. Look only if you clicked an ad, ran a file or keep seeing the site without searching for it.

The page did not install anything in our test, so "Greenconvert.net virus" is not accurate. These are the ways a visit can still go wrong.

Ads on converter sites point to fake players, fake updates and installers with extras bundled in. Running one is how adware, hijackers and now and then a trojan reach the PC. Cracks, keygens and torrent files are a far more dangerous place to get software than a converter page, but an ad on either can lead to the same kind of file.

Most YouTube videos are copyrighted, and YouTube's terms only allow downloading where YouTube itself provides a way to do it. A third-party converter can break those terms, and copying someone else's work can break the law, whatever converter you use.

Clear the site data
Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete, choose All time, tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, and click Delete data.
Reset Chrome
Open Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults and confirm with Reset settings. This resets the start page, search engine and pinned tabs and turns off extensions; bookmarks and saved passwords stay. To stop notifications after you close Chrome, also turn off Settings > System > Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed.

Clear the site data
Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Delete browsing data > Choose what to clear, set All time, tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, and click Clear now.
Reset Edge
Open Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values and confirm with Reset. Extensions are turned off and the start page goes back to default; favourites, history and saved passwords stay. To stop notifications after you close Edge, turn off Settings > System and performance > Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.

Clear cookies and site data
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Clear Data, tick both boxes and click Clear.
Refresh Firefox
Open the menu > Help > More troubleshooting information and click Refresh Firefox. Add-ons and custom settings are removed and the home page goes back to default; bookmarks, history and passwords stay.

Take back the notification permission
Safari 18 and later on macOS: open Safari > Settings > Websites > Notifications, select
x2convert.com(or any site you do not recognise) and set it to Deny, or click Remove. Untick Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications at the bottom so no site can ask again.Remove extensions you do not recognise
In Safari > Settings > Extensions, select anything you did not install yourself and click Uninstall.
Clear the site data
In Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, remove the site's data, or use History > Clear History > all history. To empty the cache as well, turn on Show features for web developers in Settings > Advanced and choose Develop > Empty Caches.
Check the Mac for apps from the ads
Ads also target Mac users with fake players and "cleaners". In Finder > Applications, move anything unknown to the Bin. In System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions, remove unknown items. Then use Go > Go to Folder to check
/Library/LaunchAgents,~/Library/LaunchAgents,/Library/LaunchDaemonsand/Library/Application Supportfor folders and files with the same unknown names, and empty the Bin.
Then, whichever browser you use
Step 1: Scan the PC if you downloaded anything from the ads
If you only saw the notifications and clicked nothing, you can stop before this step. If a notification led you to download or run something, delete that file, then scan Windows.
In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, run a Full scan, then choose Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) and Scan now. The offline scan restarts the PC and takes about 15 minutes on Windows 11 and Windows 10.

After removal: keep the ads from coming back
If you clicked an ad or ran a file
The browser steps are enough if you only saw pop-ups or redirects. If an ad led you to download or run something, do these three things as well.

Remove what was installed that day
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10), sort by install date, and uninstall every program dated the day you followed the ad (Uninstall a program or app in Windows On uGetFix).

Run two Defender scans
In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, run a Full scan, then the Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) from the scan options. The offline scan restarts the PC and can find trojans and backdoors that hide while Windows runs.

Reset the browser
Programs from ads often change the start page, search engine or extension list. Use the reset step for your browser below.
If you typed a password, card number or other details into a page an ad opened, change that password at once and tell your bank about the card.
How to keep it from happening again
Do
- Block pop-ups and redirects: in Chrome, Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects > Don't allow sites to send pop-ups or use redirects. Do the same for Notifications and Location on the same page.
- Get programs from the maker's own site or the Microsoft Store, not from a link in an ad.
- Keep the free Microsoft Defender running with its virus definitions up to date; Windows updates them itself, and a full scan is under Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Leave SmartScreen switched on in Windows Security (App & browser control) or use Chrome's Enhanced protection, so known bad pages and downloads trigger a warning.
- Back up your documents with File History or OneDrive, so a bad install or a failing disk does not take them with it.
- A VPN on a public Wi-Fi hides your IP address from the sites you visit. It does not stop ads, scripts or malware.
Don't
- Keep clicking through when a download button opens a new tab: close the tab and go back to the page you were on.
- Open an
.exeor.msithat a video downloader handed you: a real download is a video or sound file. - Install an extension, a "player" or a codec that a site demands before it gives you a video.
- Trust ads on torrent, file-conversion and adult sites: they often come from ad networks that also sell space to criminals, and criminals hide their programs under titles that tempt everyday users.
Safer ways to save a video
Use the platform's own option first: it keeps the creator's rights intact and involves no third-party site.

If you do use an online converter, use it in a browser profile with notifications blocked, ignore every button except the download link for your own file, and scan any file that turned out to be a program instead of a song or video. We advise against converter sites in general: many of them are shut down or change hands, and their ad space changes with them.

On our visit of 6 October 2026 the home page asked for no notifications, opened no pop-ups, registered no service worker and showed no ad network, so the page itself did nothing hostile.
That was one visit from Europe with a clean browser, and we did not click its buttons or run a download, so we cannot speak for ads that appear after a click, in other countries or on a later visit.

Is Greenconvert.net a virus?
No, the website is not a virus: a website cannot be one, and our test found nothing installed or downloaded by visiting the home page. Microsoft Defender has no detection name for it that we could find.
The danger comes from what ads on such sites lead to, such as fake players, fake updates and installers with extras bundled in, and from anything you download from them.
If you only looked at the page and closed it, there is nothing to remove. If you ran a file from an ad, follow the section about clicking an ad and scan the PC.
Is greenconvert.ai the same as Greenconvert.net?
The page on greenconvert.net calls greenconvert.ai its official app and its buttons lead there, so the two are presented as one service. We could not confirm who runs either domain.
The records show greenconvert.net registered on 10 May 2021 and greenconvert.ai registered on 24 February 2026, so the .ai address is much newer. We did not follow the buttons or test greenconvert.ai, so we cannot say how it behaves. Treat it with the same care:
- block notifications
- do not install anything it offers
- close any new tab it opens
Why does Greenconvert.net open pop-ups or redirect me?
Pop-ups and redirects on converter sites usually come from the ads on them, and the ad space is often sold on to networks that also serve scam pages.
They can appear after a click on any part of the page, which is what our 2022 report described. We did not see one on our visit of 6 October 2026, and one quiet visit proves little because ads change with country, device and time.
Close the new tab without clicking, do not enter details, and block pop-ups and redirects for the site in your browser settings. If it keeps happening on other sites too, check the browser for extensions you did not add.
How do I remove Greenconvert.net ads?
Close the tab, then work through the browser steps on this page:
- remove any extension you do not recognise
- turn off notification and pop-up permissions for the site
- clear its cookies and cache
- reset the browser if the start page or search engine changed
The ads come from the website, not from a program, so if you only visited it there is nothing to uninstall. If you ran a file from an ad, uninstall programs dated that day under Settings, Apps, Installed apps, and run a full Microsoft Defender scan and an offline scan.
Is it legal to use Greenconvert.net?
Visiting the site is not illegal, but what you download decides whether rules are broken. YouTube's terms of service allow downloading only as expressly authorised by the service or with written permission from YouTube and the rights holders, so a third-party converter can break them.
Copying copyrighted music or video without permission can also break copyright law, whatever converter you use, and the rules differ by country. Videos you made yourself, or that are released under a licence allowing copies, are the safe case. YouTube's own download option under Premium is the supported way to watch offline.
Does Greenconvert.net ask for notifications?
We saw no notification request on our visit of 6 October 2026, and no service worker was registered, which is the mechanism push messages need. That is one visit, so it does not mean the site never asks. If a prompt appears, click Block.
If you allowed one earlier, open the browser's site settings, find greenconvert.net or greenconvert.ai under Notifications and change it to Block, or remove it. Notifications you allowed keep arriving from the push service until you revoke them, even if the website itself stops asking.
What is a safer way to download a YouTube video?
Use the platform's own option. YouTube Premium offers Download for offline viewing in the app, and creators can download their own uploads from YouTube Studio.
For music, use a streaming service's offline mode. A third-party converter should be the last choice:
- use a browser profile with notifications blocked
- skip any extension or program it offers
- treat every button except the one for your file as an ad
Scan any download that is not a media file, and delete anything ending in .exe or .msi that a converter gave you.
